The debut 45 from Minneapolis instrumental outfit The Hi-Bridge Band brings together Cy Pierpont, Blair Krivanek, and Riley Helgeson — three former full-time members of The Lakers (Sonny Knight, The Valdons, Wanda Davis) — alongside Lakers subs Connor Carroll and Kevin Gastonguay.
“Cannonball” is a lean, hard-hitting funky soul-jazz instrumental built around groove and space. Dense bongos and congas wrap around heavy drums, while flute and baritone sax enter in short, sparse phrases. Kevin Gastonguay’s B3 adds weight underneath, and guitarist Blair Krivanek takes the track’s lone solo, moving from tight funky playing into a fiery, expressive lead.
The flip, “Nuevo Cose,” settles into a looser, more laid-back groove. Riley Helgeson — better known around here as a trumpeter — composed both sides and plays Hammond organ on this track, while Pierpont’s wah guitar and Krivanek’s Fender bass keep one foot firmly planted in a funky place.
Recorded at Pierpont’s home studio overlooking Saint Paul’s High Bridge, the two sides are built around restraint as much as intensity: strong rhythmic interplay, deliberate space, drum breaks, and just enough grit around the edges.
