The debut 45 from Dérobé Dance Band invites you to a world of mayhem. The Minneapolis based group has left a slow cooker filled with Mulatu Astatke, K. Frimpong, Peter King, Tony Allen, and Fela Kuti running for well over a year. The results are a savory meal of afrobeat and ethio-jazz served with a side of funk. Over that period, Saxophonist Cole Pulice waltzed with the dark side to compose the ferocious and unforgiving Gogoplata. Likewise, keyboardist Sam Harvey Carlson dredged the depths of the human psyche when he composed the flip side, "Kem Dahg." Beginning with an eerie and languid horn line, the song slowly unravels into lawlessness. This is the perfect 45 for either a deep funk dance party or a sacrificial rite.
