During this process we were thrilled to find songs from The Ringleaders among the label's many unreleased tracks. Furthermore, we were amazed by the quality of these unreleased gems. “Grin And Bare It” is uptempo hard soul at its finest combining a jagged guitar hook, solo lead vocal, and group harmony refrains. It is a long lost soul stomper. The flip, “I've Got To Find My Baby,” provides a taste of sweet soul slow cooked to perfection.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHailing from Saginaw, Michigan the Ringleaders first recorded for George and Ernie Leaner in April of 1966. Their sole release for M-Pac! eventually caught on in the Northern Soul scene and today copies sell for hundreds of dollars. Adding to the group's lore, two acetates with the unreleased tracks “All of My Life” and “This Is Goodbye” surfaced in the UK in the 1980s becoming holy grails of sorts, and cementing the Ringleaders as Northern Soul heavyweights. Presented here for the first time are two additional unissued tracks from The Ringleaders. Eight months after their first release, the Ringleaders recorded “Grin And Bare It” and the following month, January of 1967, they tracked “I've Got To Find My Baby” in their final session for the Leaners'. Although these are unreleased tracks, we have faithfully reproduced the M-Pac! label to pay homage to how they would have looked had they been released in 1967. Forty eight years have passed since its initial release, during which time record collectors the world over have chased down virtually every known copy for love of the B-side “Baby Can't You See.” One of the most sought after records in Northern Soul circles, used copies consistently change hands for well over a thousand dollars. With all that being said, the record is noteworthy for more than just its steadfast demand.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eBeneath the surface of these uptempo grooves lie three intertwined paths: Richmond, VA soul impresario Alexander Randolph, Little Tommy, and The Upsetters. Beyond producing this 1966 session in New York City for his Sound of Soul label, Alexander Randolph is noteworthy for recording as Mr. Wiggles, producing the \u003cem\u003eFree Angela\u003c\/em\u003e compilation, and releasing the \u003cem\u003eProphet of Soul\u003c\/em\u003e LP by Larry Saunders. Following his time with Sound of Soul, Little Tommy AKA Tyrone Thomas worked with legendary producer Swamp Dogg to record the album Wolfmoon, and then recorded with The Whole Darn Family, whose “Seven Minutes of Funk” was sampled by Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow, EPMD, Jay-Z, and more. Providing the tremendous backing tracks for this record are The Upsetters. They started out as Little Richard's backing band before branching out to become one of the most well known backing bands on the Chittlin' Circuit. In the late 1960s, Vic Pitts \u0026amp; The Cheaters were one of Milwaukee’s top R\u0026amp;B bands. They had their own TV show, played some of the city's biggest clubs, and backed up big name acts. Between 1969 and 1970 they recorded over a dozen songs with producer Andre Williams at Chess’ Ter-Mar Studio. The results show why they were such a popular live act; some tracks reveal their roots as James Brown fanatics, others relate the happening sounds of Sly \u0026amp; The Family Stone and Chicago’s first record. Highlights include an early instrumental version of their sought after “Loose Boodie,” a funked up cover of Herbie Mann's “Comin' Home Baby,” and a soulful re-imagining of Neil Young's “Down By The River,” among many others. As misfortune would have it, the album never saw the light of day.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eVan Patterson, guitarist with the Cheaters, recalled the fate of the album. “Andre Williams wanted us to cover 'River Deep' and use it as the lead single for the record.” Williams saw an opportunity, as the song was clearly a hit – it had reached #3 in the UK charts – but no one had made noise with it in the US. The Phil Spector produced Ike \u0026amp; Tina Turner single was originally released in 1966 and barely cracked the US top 100. In the months that followed, the “River Deep-Mountain High” album was abandoned and Spector went into retirement. Fortune was not on the Cheater's side, though. In late 1969, after they recorded “River Deep,” Spector and A\u0026amp;M released the “River Deep-Mountain High” album for the first time in the US. According to Van, the Cheater's album lost momentum and before long Andre Williams took off for California. Over time, the band forgot the album even existed. He and his new backing band, the Lakers, recorded I'm Still Here in a subterranean Minneapolis studio a scant seven blocks away from the basement studio beneath a long shuttered record store where he recorded his first 45 (as Little Sonny Knight \u0026amp; The Cymbols) in 1965 at age 17.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eShortly thereafter, music took a back seat to a three-year stint in the army. A few more years in the Bay Area followed, before he returned to Minnesota in the mid-1970s and joined the now-cult favorite funk group Haze. By the early ‘80s, Haze had broken up and Sonny walked away from music for a full time job as a truck driver.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eUnbeknownst to Sonny, not only had that lone single he cut as a teenager (“Tears On My Pillow” B\/W “Rain Dance”) become a prized item in R\u0026amp;B collector circles in the ensuing decades, his powerful voice had not been forgotten. After months of working together on soul revues, Sonny and Secret Stash founder \/ in-house funky drummer Eric Foss formed Sonny Knight and The Lakers. Beginning in the spring of 2013, months of rehearsals led to a series of gigs and residencies. Then, the band spent a long weekend at a cabin in Northern Minnesota. Listening to old 45s, learning gospel songs, and woodshedding tunes paved the way for the band to develop a common musical vocabulary and refine their direction. It was a defining moment that transformed them from a group of good players into a rock-solid band. They brought Sonny back into the studio and cut a new single, “Hey Girl B\/W “Sugarman,” that was released in November 2013. Without missing a beat, they began working on tracks for \"I'm Still Here\" in December and by the end of January the entire 11-song album was complete. In search of greater opportunity and a wider audience, the group moved to London in 1973. Four years and two albums later they disbanded. Meanwhile, back in Nigeria, prominent businessman G.A.D. Tabansi was interested in getting into the music business, and signing the Funkees was his top priority. He traveled all the way to London to meet with the band only to find out they’d broken up. Tabansi returned home with no record deal.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eMosco had already formed a new group called Africanium with drummer\/singer Willie Bestman. Later that same year (1977), they recorded an album at TMC Studios in London. It was originally intended for release by EMI, but instead Mosco licensed the album, titled \u003cem\u003eFor You Specially\u003c\/em\u003e, to Mr. Tabansi for release on his new label.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eIn an attempt to make the album more commercially viable, it was released under the artist name Harry Mosco rather than Africanium (a largely unknown band). In an even further attempt to appeal to the masses, the word FUNKEES was printed on the cover to help consumers make the connection between Mosco and his former band.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eDespite Tabansi’s attempts to capitalize on the success of Mosco’s previous recordings with The Funkees, \u003cem\u003eFor You Specially\u003c\/em\u003e was released with very little commercial success. Undaunted by the poor sales of their first attempt, Tabansi and Mosco tried again and released Country Boy in 1978. It would go on to become one of the best-selling Nigerian records of all time. To this day, many people mistakenly credit \u003cem\u003eCountry Boy\u003c\/em\u003e as Mosco’s first solo record. In fact, before his death in 2012, Mosco told Uchenna Ikonne (co-producer of For You Specially reissue) that he himself had forgotten all about \u003cem\u003eFor You Specially\u003c\/em\u003e. Mosco did however recycle some of the songs from that album in releases during the 1980s.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eWe are proud to present the first ever reissue of this rare Nigerian funk gem from one of the most influential musicians in the genre. In April of 2013 Free Angela \u0026amp; All Political Prisoners, an independent film about Davis was released to much critical acclaim, fetching awards at the Toronto International Film Festival Gala World Premiere, the London International Film Festival, as well as the Stockholm International Film Festival.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eOriginally released in 1971, the album Free Angela was sold to raise money for the National United Committee to Free Angela Davis. It was put together by Alexander Randolph - a singer, promoter, and record label owner from Virginia. The first half of the album was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, beginning with the title track by Larry Saunders. On his songs, Saunders' vocals float above and transcend the ethereal backing of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. His voice can be compared to singers like Donny Hathaway and Curtis Mayfield, but Saunders is his own man, with his own style. His work on this album is essential listening in the realm of socially conscious soul music. The second half of the album continues with solid mid-1960s rarities from Randolph's Sound of Soul label. In 1979, he recorded one last record, “African Dialects,” before moving back to Nigeria later that year. The record is a HEAVY blend of Afrobeat, Afro Funk, and Caribbean sounds. After the record was complete, King gave a sub-master and the album art slick to Plastic Fantastic Records to release. Unfortunately, they never released the record. Soon after Peter’s return to Nigeria the record was released on the newly formed (and short lived) Grandstar Records. He held a regular gig with Dyke and The Blazers on Broadway in NYC, toured with Wilson Pickett and The Staple Singers, and also performed sporadically with the queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. All of his hard work finally paid off (though not financially) when he recorded his first single, “Shout Bamalama” in late 1967. It sold a million copies!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1969 Murray was signed to King Records. The label was preparing for the inevitable loss of James Brown. Since they obviously couldn’t afford to sign another act of Brown’s caliber, they decided to develop their own. Mickey was groomed by the label to become their next superstar act. He recorded People Are Together and they prepared to release it in 1970 on their Federal Records imprint. They chose the title track as the lead single. The response from most of the black DJs they relied on for support was that they wouldn’t play the song. Most of them feared that the song was far too racially provocative for a developing artist. In fact, many black DJs said they were concerned they’d lose their job if they played the track. It didn’t take long at all for King to abandon the release. They’ve toured Europe, Mexico, Africa, the Caribbean and the United States (including a central Park concert boasting over 20,000 attendees). It has been said by many that Tabou Combo is Haitian music. Their unique blend of American funk and soul with native sounds has earned them legions of devoted fans the world over. However, their popularity didn’t exactly occur overnight. In fact, after a couple years of playing around Haiti the group disbanded and went their separate ways. Most of the members settled down in different parts of the US. By late 1971 Tabou Combo reformed in Brooklyn, NY. It wasn’t until 1975 that they scored their first real hit, though. But, that time between ’71 and ’75 is when some of their most exciting and experimental music was created. The most notable of which was 1973’s “Respect…” LP.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe album is true to their roots as a Compas (Haitian party music) band. Rather than play American pop music with flavors of Haitian music, they focused their sound on Compas and used funk, soul, and psych as extra spice. All of the songs are sung in Haitian Creole, with the exception of a couple ballads that are performed in French (a common practice in Haiti at the time). The intricate guitars drenched in psychedelic effects fuse seamlessly with non-stop hard driving percussion to create one of the most hypnotic, unique sounds ever recorded. He appears to have arrived out of thin air, recorded one of the funkiest albums in African history, and then vanished. Before recording this album he toured all over West Africa playing in such bands as Benya Beats, Blue Monks (which C.K. Mann, Ebo Taylor, and Pat Thomas were all members of), and the legendary Uhuru Dance Band (one of today’s most popular artists from this scene thanks to some wonderful compilations in recent years). He honed his skills playing with some of the country’s greatest musicians and arrangers. Hot and Jumpy is the culmination of many years of hard work and musical exploration.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs the cover art states, Hot and Jumpy offers up “New Dimensions in African Hustle! Reggae! Native! Soul!” It ranges from monster funk bombs like “Just For A Moment” and “Araba Soso Wo Ndzema” to super mellow reggae cuts like “African Reggae” (which pretty much breaks any stereotypes about Ghanaian Reggae). “Why Worry-Let’s Do Highlife” is a refreshingly funky take on the classic sound of Ghana. The influence of American and British music was extremely present. In fact, some artists even covered songs (in English) by the Beatles, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, and more. Successful Iranian musicians were treated like America treats Hollywood A-listers.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1979 religious leaders throughout Iran grew angry with what they perceived to be the Shah’s attempt to wipe out Islam from their country. This sparked the Iranian revolution that put the anti-western Ayatollah Kohmeini in power. Once in power, Kohmeini eliminated the Iranian record business. He saw it as being riddled with western influence and a threat to his regime’s power. They burned most of the country’s recording studios and rid the country of its popular musicians. Most were exiled from Iran while others were put on house arrest.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFinally, 40 years later, some of the long lost popular music of Iran is beginning to resurface. While searching through thousands of records for rare Peruvian grooves, we stumbled over some great funky Mexican records. Our favorite was Grupo Oz’s “Miss Thing” LP. At times, the raw grittiness of it reminded us of early Funkadelic records (staples around the SSR offices).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1971 a group of studio musicians calling themselves Grupo Oz in Mexico City got together and recorded a collection of original psych-funk tunes in their home town. They called the album, “Miss Thing.” Their label, Discos Raff (Three Souls In My Mind, La Cosa Nostra, El Ritual) had high hopes for the skilled players. Not only were they some of the most solid players in Mexico at the time, but they created their own sound rooted deeply in American funk and soul. Their songs were all in English and they actually sounded natural singing in English. Discos Raff orchestrated the release of the record in Latin America as well as Spain, but always kept the US market its top priority. In fact, most of the 1,500 units that were pressed ended up in the US. By early 1972 the band’s crossover success hadn’t materialized and the label ceased all promotional efforts for the record. All of the players went back to their usual studio work and Grupo Oz disappeared forever. Today however, the legend of the psych-funk band from Mexico City has spread throughout the world. For years, we have reissued and compiled sixties and seventies soul, African, and Latin music, and recently we've started channeling those aesthetics and sounds into new recordings. The pair of sides on this new release are a perfect representation of these two focuses. The A-side is a new recording by The Valdons, while the flip side unearths a long forgotten 1971 demo of the same song.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn Spring 2013, The Valdons hit the studio for the first time in over forty years. Each of the three tracks laid to tape that day had been written and demoed out by the group in the early 1970s, but never finished. The first two tracks were released that winter as their debut Secret Stash 45, “Stop, Wait A Minute Girl” b\/w “Whatcha Gonna Do,” but the third gorgeous track from that session, “Just How Much Can One Man Stand,” remained on the shelf.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eClose to a full year after that session, Valdons singer Monroe Wright III played another cassette for us. It contained an alternate early 1970s workup of “Just How Much Can One Man Stand.” While what the group recorded in 2013 mirrored practically note-for-note their first cassette demo, this version was more laid back; the Curtis Mayfield inspired vocals from Napoleon Crayton effortlessly floating on top of the band, with guitarist Donald Breedlove dishing out soulful licks that land somewhere between jazz and soul. The cassette had been played many times over the years, and that left the recording sounding rough around the edges. Still, this long forgotten demo, propelled by a tremendous singer and band at their prime, is one of only a handful of existing recordings by these Twin Cities legends. The sound was a mix of the Cuban music they grew up with and American R\u0026amp;B like James Brown and Hank Ballard. It quickly caught on and before long the young purveyors of this new sound were taking business from the likes of Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Eddie Palmieri. Soon the established acts reluctantly joined the craze and recorded a smattering of Boogloos. However, many of them were not happy about it. In general they felt it was beneath them. Eventually a small group of the most powerful people in the Latin music business conspired to kill off the Boogaloo and make way for the burgeoning Salsa craze. Concert promoters, DJs, and venues were bribed to turn away any and all Boogaloo business.
