Tommy Wills "K.C. Drive"

Tommy Wills "K.C. Drive"

LISTEN ON ALL PLATFORMS

Midwest bandleader, saxophonist, and label owner Tommy Wills left his mark across swing, mambo, and R&B. But “K.C. Drive,” recorded in 1973 in Indianapolis, finds him deep in the groove of raw, unfiltered funky soul-jazz.

Strangely enough, there’s almost no sax to be found here—just Wills letting his rhythm section stretch out and do what they do best. A ripping B3 takes the lead, dancing, swirling, and stabbing over a deep, in-the-pocket groove, while the wah guitar oozes funky, loose-limbed attitude. Sometimes the best way for a bandleader to lead is to just let the band play.
