The St. Louis–Chicago pipeline that also delivered the Five Du-Tones and Alvin Cash brought the Sharpees to One-derful!. Born March 27, 1930 in Tupelo, Mississippi, guitarist Benny Sharp led the group. Their One-derful! debut, “Do The 45,” landed in mid-1965 and spent three weeks on the Cash Box R&B chart. They went on to cut several more sides for the Leaners’ label group—records that have since become prized Northern Soul staples, with original copies fetching hundreds, even thousands, among collectors.
