LISTEN ON ALL PLATFORMS

“Shadow Boxing” by The Mighty Chevelles is a heavy slice of rare instrumental funk from 1977. Formed in Milledgeville, Georgia, the group became the house band for Eugene Davis’ Flaming Arrow label, which operated out of both Macon and Detroit. In that role, they backed vocalists such as Gloria Walker and Angela Davis.

While those collaborations remain favorites, it’s the band’s own releases that truly highlight their deep, hard-hitting funk sound.
